Where Did the "Never Switch Back" Myth Come From?
When synthetic motor oils were introduced in the 1970s (such as early Mobil 1 formulations), they used ester base stocks that caused certain nitrile rubber engine seals to shrink and leak. When drivers switched back to conventional oil, the seals expanded rapidly, causing failure.
For the past 30+ years, all API-certified motor oils include seal swelling conditioning agents. Today, synthetic and conventional oils interact with engine gaskets and seals identically.
Synthetic vs Conventional: When Should You Use Synthetic?
- Turbocharged Engines: Turbos spin up to 200,000 RPM and generate extreme heat. Full synthetic oil is mandatory to prevent thermal coking (baked oil sludge).
- 0W-20 / 0W-16 Specs: If your vehicle specifies 0W-20 or 0W-16 oil (most 2015+ Toyotas, Hondas, Subarus), 0W viscosity is only physically possible as a full synthetic.
- Extreme Cold or Heat: Synthetic oil flows instantly at -30°F and resists breakdown up to 400°F.
Oil Change Interval Adjustment When Switching
If you switch from full synthetic back to conventional oil, remember to adjust your oil change interval:
- Full Synthetic: Change every 7,500 – 10,000 miles (or 1 year).
- Conventional Oil: Change every 3,000 – 5,000 miles (or 6 months).
